Areas

Albox

Albox is a typical Spanish market town, situated approximately 420m above sea level, and approximately 130km from the provincial capital of Almeria. All services and facilities can be found in Albox including shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars and several builders merchants. There are schools for children of all ages and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool which opens in July and August, a sports centre, and a tennis club which also has its own swimming pool. A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings.


Arboleas

Arboleas is a typical Spanish village situated in the Almeria province, approximately 278m above sea level, and approximately 8km from Albox. Arboleas is centred around the church, situated on the edge of the rambla that once ran as the River Almanzora. This growing village currently has 3 supermarkets, a post office, banks, bakers, bars, restaurants, a chemist and a doctor who has an English speaking nurse. There is a local school for children of under 12 years and a bus service to the nearest secondary school in Albox. A municipal swimming pool is currently under construction, along with basket ball courts and childrens playgrounds. The weekly market is held every Saturday morning where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes, shoes, linen, etc.


Baza

Being the largest municipality of the province of Granada, Baza stretches over 545 km2. The region of Baza has a population of around 20,000, of which around 90% reside in and around the city of Baza. The remainder are found to be living in the large towns nearby such as el Baul, Caniles, Cullar and Freila. The traditional cave houses of Baza are becoming very popular, particularly in the development of rural tourism. They offer an ideal environment for living all year round, being easy to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. There are diverse activities to be enjoyed in the region of Baza. Within the city are various monuments and Arabic baths to be explored, and the surrounding countryside offers the opportunity for hiking, mountain biking and paragliding. The remarkable lakes of el Negratin offer not only beautiful scenery but also the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of watersports. The city is 848 metres above sea level and the market is every Wednesday morning. Baza offers all the amenities you would expect of a modern city, including schools, a museum, a theatre, cinemas, cyber-cafes, shops, bars and a hospital.


Caniles

The town of Caniles is situated in the Granada province, approximately 911m above sea level, and approximately 62km from Albox. Caniles has all the facilities you would expect of a large town comprising some 8000 inhabitants, including shops, bars, restaurants, medical centres, schools for children of all ages and a college. The nearest large hospital is in Baza, approximately 6m away.


Cantoria

The moorish town of Cantoria is situated in the Almeria province, approximately 382m above sea level and approximately 11km south of Albox. Cantoria offers a wide range of amenities including town hall, post office, shops, banks, bars, restaurants, and a B&B. There are schools for children of all ages and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest hospital is approximately 34km away. Sports facilities include a swimming pool, basketball court and a football pitch. The town also boasts a theatre, and has its own fireworks fiesta in the winter. The local market is held on Wednesday mornings.


Freila

Freila is a beautiful town with approximately 1,000 inhabitants, nestling right on the edge of the stunning Lake Negratin at 804 metres above sea level. The town has a primary school and a doctor´s surgery as well as shops, banks, a library, a swimming pool, bars and a restaurant. The local market is on Monday mornings. Just 16km from the city of Baza, Freila provides an excellent option for those seeking the tranquility of rural Spain but keen to be close to amenities.


Guadix

The cathedral town of Guadix is well off the beaten path, in the eastern confines of the Province of Granada, a large, bustling country town with a personality all of its own. At 1143 metres above sea level, Guadix is a crumbling old Moorish town with a vast and extraordinary cave suburb. The beautiful ochre land and the dazzling whitewashed caves and cottages contrast dramatically with the snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada, which loom above. In the centre of Guadix is the Cathedral, founded in 1594, and the Cave Museum. A few miles to the East is the fascinating Castle of the Calahorra. Guadix has excellent communication links, hospitals, schools, entertainment, museums, art galleries, shops, bars, restaurants & supermarkets. The local market is on Saturday mornings. Skiing is available for a good part of the year as well as pony trekking, horse riding or organised walking tours.


Lúcar

Lúcar is a small town situated in the Almeria province, approximately 895m above sea level and approximately 33km from Albox. Lúcar has a town hall, post office, Cajamar bank, supermarkets, bakers, a restaurant and several bars. There is a school for children of up to 12 years, and a bus service to the nearest secondary school in Tijola approximately 7km away. Lúcar has its own medical centre open from 9am-2pm. The nearest 24 hour medical centre is in Tijola and the nearest major hospital can be found in Baza approximately 45km away. Sports facilities include a swimming pool, football pitch and tennis courts. The local market is held on Friday mornings. The nearby village of Cela boasts a natural thermal spring swimming pool which is open all year round with a water temperature of approximately 22°C.


Oria

Oria is a small town situated in the Almeria province, approximately 1025m above sea level and approximately 24km from Albox. Oria has a town hall, post office, banks, shops, several bars, a restaurant and schools for children up to the age of 12 years. The nearest secondary schools are in Albox and Cantoria. There is a 24 hour medical centre, with the nearest large hospital being in Huercal Overa. The municipal swimming pool is open in July and August and the local market is held on Sunday mornings.


Purchena

Purchena is a small town situated in the Almeria province, approximately 555m above sea level and approximately 23km from Albox. The town has all amenities including a town hall, supermarkets, banks, bars, restaurants and schools for children of all ages. Purchena has a municipal pool along with football and tennis facilities. There is a local doctor and the nearest hospitals can be found in either Baza or Huercal Overa. The local market takes place on Thursday mornings.


Serón

Serón is a major town, situated in the Almeria province, approximately 822m above sea level and approximately 39km from Albox. Serón boasts all of the facilities that you would expect of a modern Spanish town including schools, shops, a post office, medical centres, a bus station and sports facilities including a swimming pool. Serón is also the cultural centre of the area, boasting a theatre set in an unusual building that features prominently as you come into the town. The local weekly market takes place on Friday mornings.


Taberno

Taberno is a small town situated in the Almeria province, approximately 704m above sea level and approximately 13km from Albox. Taberno has a town hall, shops, several bars, a hotel with a restaurant, and a municipal swimming pool. There is a school for children of up to 12 years, and the nearest secondary school is in Albox. A small local market is held on Saturday mornings.


Tijola

Tíjola is a large town situated in the Almeria province, approximately 693m above sea level, and approximately 31km from Albox. Tijola has the usual mix of shops, banks, bars and restaurants as well as schools for children of all ages. There is a medical centre and the nearest large hospital is situated in the town of Baza. The local market is held on Saturday mornings.


Zurgena

Zurgena is a small town situated in the Almeria province, approximately 248m above sea level and approximately 12km from Albox. Zurgena has a town hall, post office, supermarkets/ general stores, several bars, a butchers and a hardware store. There is a school for children of up to 12 years and the nearest secondary school is in Alfoquia, only 1km away. Zurgena has a medical centre and a chemists with an english speaking pharmacist. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa approximately 13km away. The municipal swimming pool is situated in nearby Alfoquia.
